LOCAL lawyer Katherine Deves has been announced as the Liberals candidate to take on Independent Zali Steggall, for the seat of Warringah at the federal election.
Steggall, who is also a lawyer, won the seat from Liberals' Tony Abbott in the 2019 election.
On Saturday, the Liberals announced Ms Deves as their candidate for Warringah following in-fighting in the party and threats of a "civil war" if an outsider was endorsed for the seat.
Ms Deves is a Manly Vale resident and women's advocate, and wants to make sure the community has a strong advocate focused on key local issues.
"Our local businesses have been hit particularly hard by the impact of the global COVID pandemic," she said. "With families struggling with cost of living, this electorate needs a representative who will focus on supporting our community's infrastructure and small business' needs, and safeguarding our unique natural character.

"I have worked hard all of my life to set a strong example for my children [three daughters]. I want to show them that you have to stand up for your local community, and put the community's needs at the forefront of everything you do.
"I will make sure that local families and businesses have someone that speaks up for them in government, and can deliver."
Ms Deves said that if elected, she will be a passionate advocate for our small and family businesses, the creation of local jobs, and investment in local services and infrastructure.
