FOR the first time in 73 years the seat of Mackellar has turned teal with independent Dr Sophie Scamps winning at the federal election.
The victory came just 2.5 hours after polls closed and a packed auditorium of her supporters at Dee Why RSL Club erupted into applause.
Dr Scamps has campaigned on a number of key points including climate, integrity and health, and it resonated with voters.

At 10pm, 64.8 per cent of the vote in Mackellar has been counted, with Dr Scamps holding 54.4 per cent of votes.
"It is absolutely incredible," Dr Scamps told the Northern Beaches Review after she'd declared her win.
With a very croaky voice after weeks of campaigning across the electorate, she said it was a very exciting time.
"People have stood up knowing that they deserve to be heard and to be genuinely represented and that's what we've stood up for," she said.
"It's a win for democracy and a win for our future."
During her campaign, Dr Scamps said people reported to her that they were feeling hopeful for the first time in a long time.
"Thank you so much, that's a vote for democracy and it's a vote for genuine representation," she said. "Thank you so much for putting your trust in me and I will do everything I can to genuinely represent you and take our voice and our values to Canberra. Well done, thank you."
Dr Scamps thanked all her volunteers for their "energy and passion".
Incumbent Liberal MP for Mackellar, Jason Falinski, declared his defeat and has called Dr Scamps to congratulate her.
