A FEW years ago, a casual drink at The Newport first introduced Emma and Jake Phelps to the northern beaches. Although originally from Sydney, they weren't familiar with the area and were working in Hong Kong at the time. They organised to catch up with friends at the popular watering hole.
"After lunch we drove around and loved it," says Emma.
"We hadn't even decided to move home at that point but it was that lunch that sealed the deal. After exploring Newport that day, we had our sights set on it and moved back a year later."
They found this five bedroom, three bathroom home with five car spots at 165 Wallumatta Road, Newport, and embarked on a renovation. The project was all in a day's work for Emma, an interior decorator who runs Emma Phelps by Design.
"We wanted a beach vibe with a luxe coastal feel," she says.
With views of Pittwater, the tri-level home sits above the Royal Motor Yacht Club and looks across to Bayview.
"The bifold doors open all the way up and it creates this massive indoor outdoor space. That's where we spend most of our time with our family meals and gatherings with friends. My favourite space is the kitchen. I love looking out at the sunset as I cook. It's just beautiful."
While the interiors are clearly stylish, Emma says it's the view that often captures people's imaginations. "Every room bar one has Pittwater views," she says. "You even have a view showering and getting dressed. The parents' retreat is a highlight for me, it's great to escape occasionally especially when you have three kids."
It's been the ideal location for the family, who love the water and the outdoors. Jake, who works in banking, is an avid surfer. "The kids are in nippers and we rarely leave the northern beaches, let alone Newport. It's just a great coastal lifestyle."
