PROPERTY OF THE WEEK

New home for sale in Fairlight

House of the week is Federation fantasy in Fairlight

Peter Harvey and his partner Kylie first discovered this Federation home in 2013. "It was a really striking house with multiple levels and we could see the opportunity to creating a beautiful area at the top," says Peter, who works in banking and technology.

"We renovated the whole top section with an open plan kitchen, and living and dining area. We put in skylights to create more light and the part I love best is the bedroom, ensuite and dressing room, which can also be used as a study.

"The master bedroom fronts onto a balcony that looks over the suburbs. It still has the beautiful original lead pattern ceiling and when you open the doors it lets summer breezes flow through."

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom with space for two cars home sits on a sandstone base also has period features combined with a modern airy style. It also makes the most out of indoor/outdoor living opening out to a heated saltwater pool. "Even in winter, I use the pool at least once a week," he says.

Peter and Kylie, who is a lieutenant commander in the navy, have brought up their three kids, now aged 16 to 23, in the home. With two moved out of home, they are keen to downsize but will stay in the northern beaches.

"I'm a complete water baby," says Peter. "I love being in the water in any way, shape or form, whether that's wing foiling or kitesurfing. It's a 15-minute walk to Manly Beach from here. The house also has an exit to Brisbane Street so you can walk out the back for five minutes and catch the city bus or go to the Fairlight shops.

"The other amazing thing about this house is that it's on a hill and there's so much glass that you're always warm in winter. But in summer, even though there are ceiling fans, you never need them because it's so cool and airy."
