LOCKDOWN will end at midnight on Saturday for residents in the northern zone of the northern beaches.
From 12.01am on Sunday, January 10 residents in the northern zone will be counted as part of greater Sydney and subject to restrictions for that area.
NSW health minister Brad Hazzard made the announcement at 11am on Friday, but said health authorities still had concerns for the area.
"Clearly we were hoping there would be no reservations about opening up the northern end of the northern beaches, but of course the case of the gentlemen in his 40s yesterday [Thursday] returning a positive case has caused the public officials a degree of anxiety, a degree of concern," he said.
"The big issue for the public health officials was, and is, that the gentleman who returned the positive case yesterday had previously shown negative results so it is concerning. Perhaps he has had a second infection of the virus, that's possible, but it's really the unknown that worrying.
"It could be an indicator of unknown chains of transmission still circulating in the far end of the northern beaches."
Mr Hazzard said the decision to ease restrictions in the northern zone was due to the response from residents in the area to getting tested, particularly before Christmas.
"Public health has sufficient confidence that if we can expect a similar response from the northern beaches then we can, with confidence and some reservations, enable the opening up of that community," he said.

Meanwhile, NSW Health has also renewed its call for anyone who visited Avalon Woolworths between January 2-6, and Chemist Warehouse in Avalon on January 3 to get tested immediately and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.
Visitors who went to the chemist between 1-1.15pm must get tested, with a number of alert times for the Woolworths store.
